Flag Etiquette in the USA: Showing Respect to Old Glory

The American flag, known affectionately as “Old Glory,” represents the ideals and history of the United States. It’s a symbol of freedom, courage, and unity. To show proper respect for the flag, it’s important to understand and follow flag etiquette. In this guide, we’ll explore the do’s and don’ts of displaying and caring for the American flag.

Display the Flag with Pride

Properly displaying the American flag is a fundamental aspect of flag etiquette. When flying it outdoors, make sure it’s in good condition and properly illuminated at night. The union (the blue field with stars) should always be in the upper left corner when viewed from the street.

Half-Staff for Mourning

When the nation is in mourning, such as after the death of a prominent government official or a national tragedy, the flag should be flown at half-staff as a sign of respect. The flag should first be raised to the peak and then lowered to halfway between the top and bottom of the staff.

Do Not Let it Touch the Ground

One of the most critical aspects of flag etiquette is to never allow the American flag to touch the ground or floor. Handle it with care and respect at all times.

Properly Fold the Flag

When you’re done displaying the flag, fold it properly. The traditional method is the triangular fold, which results in a compact, triangular shape with only the blue field and stars visible.

Replace Worn or Damaged Flags

Flags are subject to wear and tear from exposure to the elements. It’s important to replace a flag that is faded, torn, or otherwise damaged. Disposing of an old flag should be done respectfully, often through burning in a retirement ceremony.

Respect During the National Anthem

During the national anthem, everyone should stand at attention and face the flag with their right hand over their heart. Gentlemen? Please remove your hat and hold it over your heart. Military personnel in uniform should salute.

Do Not Use the Flag for Advertisement

Using the American flag for commercial purposes, like printing it on disposable items or clothing, is generally considered disrespectful. The flag should not be used as part of a costume or a decoration.

Proper Care and Cleaning

If the flag becomes dirty, it should be cleaned gently by hand with mild detergent and cold water. Never place it in a washing machine. If it appears that you won’t be able to clean the flag you’ll want to consider replacing it.

Respecting the American flag is a fundamental expression of patriotism. By following these flag etiquette guidelines, you honor the principles and values for which Old Glory stands. It’s not just a piece of fabric; it’s a symbol of a nation’s history and ideals.
